Chapter 34

“Human beings are made up of flesh and blood, and a miracle fiber called courage.”

George S. Patton, Jr.

The Crystal Palace, Operation Overtime

1402 hours, May 5

“You need to let me handle this,” Green Ghost said. “You’re too valuable to die a third time, maybe for real.”

Angriff grunted. “I have no intention of dying again. But if either of these bastards so much as sneezes, don’t hesitate to cut him down, with extreme prejudice.”

Steeple tried to return Angriff’s glare, but soon averted his eyes. Claringdon stared back, face filled with hate. Then the first shot rang out, and everything happened within seconds.

Angriff opened the Crystal Palace door with the pistol extended, turning toward the ramp. The two guards had both gone to one knee, aiming downward and not looking back. Angriff saw one of the guards at the foot running toward the doorway when Sergeant Dupree cut him down with two shots in the back. He then engaged the other guard at the ramp’s bottom.

The two at the top swung their aim at Dupree, but Angriff was faster. He aimed at the one on his right and put a round into the back of the man’s head, which exploded like one of the watermelons he used to practice with in his backyard in Virginia. The other half turned before Angriff put his second shot into the small of his back, just above the coccyx. With the soldier lying on the grated steel, blood dripped through the mesh to the floor below.

Meanwhile, Dupree kept the last guard pinned down so Schiller could flank him at the doorway. Three shots put him down, too. As the the reports echoed through the Clam Shell, Angriff walked over to the wounded Chinese soldier. Despite his rage, his righteous rage, Angriff felt only pity for the dying man. He knelt beside him. The man seemed to be mouthing something.

“You trying to tell me something, soldier?”

“F-fuck you.”

“Too late for that now. You had your chance.”

“And fuck your whore wife.”

Angriff’s eyes widened and he stood up. “You shouldn’t have said that. I think it’s time for you to get off my headquarters.”

Using his boot, he shoved the man over the side and off the balcony. Flailing as he fell fifty feet to the tile floor, he hit with a wet smack and the crack of splintering bone.

Without more than a glance down at the dead man, Angriff saw Schiller looking up at him and waved the sergeant major up the ramp. “All right, J.C., find Colonel Walling and see if he’s in shape to get up here. In the meantime, what should I do first?”

“If I were you, General, I’d call Colonel Coughlan first. He’s got orders to provide artillery support for the Chinese attack on Sierra.”

“He what?”

“It’s true, General. He issued the same order to fire on Prescott and on the Marines in New Mexico.”

“Put me through to Colonel Coughlan. I’ll take it here.”

“He also cancelled your order for air support for General Tompkins.”

“After you get me
